Anaheim Ducks select Tyson Hinds in the 3rd Round

With their second 3rd round pick in the 2021 draft, 76th overall, the Ducks selected Tyson Hinds. The 6’-3” 178 lb defenseman played for Shawinigan and Rimouski this past season putting up 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 33 games.

He played 10 of those 33 games with Shawinigan before being moved to Rimouski where he played the rest of the season. He struggled in Shawinigan, where his role was diminished and he only scored 1 point, but once he was moved to a rebuilding Rimouski, he really found his game. In Rimouski he was given a bigger role and put up 15 points in 31 games.

He is very raw though in a lot of aspects of his game, but if the Ducks can work with him and develop him, he could become a real diamond in the rough. His skating stride needs work and with proper strength training and coaching, he could improve that. Similarly, he needs to work on his break out game. At times, he will treat the puck like a grenade on the breakout.

In order to become a NHLer, both of those aspects of his game have to improve. You cannot play in the NHL unless you can make a clean breakout pass and can skate.

He does have a #bigboomingshot that he utilized to create most of his points this past season.

With all of that being said, this feels like a reach from the Ducks. They took him due to his size and his finish to the season. He probably would have been available in the 4th or 5th round. Hinds will have to improve significantly in order to make it in the NHL, but if he does he could become a stalwart on the Ducks blue line for a long time.

Here is his player card per Jfresh’s Patreon.
