Ducks Goaltender John Gibson Selected to 3rd All-Star Team; Forward Troy Terry Snubbed

The 2022 NHL All-Star Game will take place on February 5, 2022, in Las Vegas, NV. Today, the NHL announced the rosters for all four divisional All-Star teams. Nine of the ten slots for each team were selected by NHL Hockey Operations, while the tenth “Last Man In” will be voted on by fans from a group of players consisting of one player from each team.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ducks goaltender John Gibson was selected as one of the two Pacific Division goalies, along with Thatcher Demko of the Vancouver Canucks. While Gibson has been elite on the penalty kill this season (2nd in the NHL in shorthanded Fenwick Save % at 95.93%), he has been below replacement level at even strength (53rd in the NHL in even-strength Fenwick Save % at 93.65%) (note: statistics courtesy of Evolving Hockey). However, due to both the Ducks’ strong start this season and Gibson’s stellar history during Anaheim’s previous contending window, it is not a complete shock that he was selected.

What was a shock, however, is that Ducks forward Troy Terry was not selected among the seven Pacific Division forwards by NHL Hockey Operations. Instead, he was listed among the eight “Last Man In” contenders, and therefore could still earn an All-Star appearance based on the fan vote for that category. Terry’s omission from the seven forwards selected is especially egregious when comparing his numbers to some of those who were chosen. For example, Terry’s offensive and defensive on-ice metrics dwarf those of both Jordan Eberle (SEA) and Leon Draisaitl (EDM) (see below RAPM charts courtesy of Evolving Hockey).

If you think Terry should be an All Star, make sure to vote for him in the Last Man In Fan Vote!
